Jerry Z. Long

Jerry was born in Portland, OR and attended public schools in Crescent City, CA.

He served in the US Navy from 1947 to 1955 with one year of that in Korean waters on the USS Bayonne PF-21. He also served as an electronic technician on a Submarine Tender and two different Aircraft Carriers achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer at age 23.

He is a Cum Laude graduate of Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA majoring in Physics.

Jerry joined the Federal Aviation Administration in 1959 as instructor/relief, based in Los Angeles, CA and traveled throughout the 11 Western States.

FAA assignments progressed from various engineering positions in the Fresno and Hayward, CA District Offices (SMDO) and the San Francisco Area Office to management responsibilities. He was the Sector Manager at Lancaster and Oakland, CA General NAS Sectors and was Manager at the Oakland ARTCC when he retired in 1985.

Although Jerry received FAA's Distinguished Career Service Award, he relates that he is most proud of being among the first in FAA to introduce Quality type management and to see people he worked with progress to top management positions.
